A Weekend of Hockey at Milton Abbey

Our hockey teams had a busy day on Saturday braving the chilly winter weather to take on their opposition, Milton Abbey School.

U14 XI

Final Result: 1-2

The team gave 100%, as they always do, but in the first three quarters of the match they were possibly trying a little too hard. By the final quarter they had relaxed into the game and Alice J moved the ball up the pitch strongly, sent it out to Tess who passed it back to Alice. The ball was sent hard across the D and Isabel D was perfectly positioned to score a great goal with a big, clean sweep. After this stunning play the team grew in confidence and their hockey improved immeasurably. Who knows what would have happened if we hadn’t run out of time!

Senior / U15 XI

Final Result: 2-0

The U15 team, ably supported by a few senior players, produced their best performance of the year, beating Milton Abbey’s 2nd XI on a bitterly cold Saturday afternoon. The match was hard-fought throughout with plenty of firm tackles and big hits, with both teams attempting to assert their dominance on the game. The match really could have gone either way in the first half with both teams creating plenty of attacking opportunities. The St Mary’s defence held strong however, with Dodo, Livvy and Alexa dominating our defensive circle. This strong defence allowed our attacking players to thrive and take risks in attack. This paid-off towards the end of the first half as Lucy managed to slot home a goalmouth scramble, giving St Mary’s a 1-0 lead at half time.

The second half saw St Mary’s control possession a little more and they managed to double their lead halfway through the second half with Lara finishing off a good attacking move. St Mary’s managed to nullify Milton Abbey’s attack for the rest of the match and secured a very impressive 2-0 win against some stiff opposition.

1st XI

Final Result: 0-1

Probably one of the most physical matches we have played this year ended in a 1-0 loss but it could so easily have gone the other way.

It was barely above freezing point and the pitch was very slippery. Most of the St Mary’s team fell at least once, with Caro, Ella and Ollie going over more than once. The opposition seemed to be used to the surface and none of them fell! Milton Abbey got a goal in the first quarter, after an attack down the right hand side and a cross to the centre which was impossible to stop by Begoña who had stepped in at the last minute when our goalie was unwell. The whole team played really good hockey and we had a several chances, with St Mary’s being the stronger team in the last two quarters but we just couldn’t get a goal. We couldn’t fault the efforts of any of the team and the girls should really be proud of keeping their tempers when really tested by some very strong players on the opposition.  Only one more match for the 1st team this season next weekend – we are determined to win!
