U14s Ace Early Season Tennis!

The Tennis U14  A Team made an impressive start to their season on Thursday last week with a convincing win over Clayesmore.  All the girls played with spirit and consistency. It can often be very easy to play a weaker side with arrogance or a blasé approach, but all the teams were generous of spirit, sensitive to their opponents’ nerves and were a credit to all that is great about St Mary’s girls!

The U14 B Team also made an impressive start to their season with a convincing win over Clayesmore, too. As with the A Team, everyone played with spirit and consistency. It was lovely to see new players blending with old so successfully and embracing new partners! There was some solid serving, great rallies and super net play which is beginning to appear in some games. It was a thoroughly deserved win for the B’s who should take great confidence from their successful start this season.

Following Thursday’s matches, the U14 teams met Sherborne on Saturday. Sherborne are always amongst our toughest opposition and this was no exception. Both teams had strength across their 3 pairs, and all games began with tough serving, powerful groundstrokes and some exciting rallies.

The St Marys A Team played with intelligence, patience and most importantly of all, with excellent sportsmanship. Munashe demonstrated real calm under pressure on a couple of her service games and Tess and Munashe secured 2 out of 3 sets, beating the toughest Sherborne pair 6-4. Sofia and Emilia also took 1 set 6-4, but sadly Ioana and Charlotte both struggled with sore knees and were definitely not at their fittest or strongest on court today.

In the B Team matches, all three of our pairs played with real tactical awareness, patience, determination and resilience! Up against some strong pairs, Lily and Emilia played out of their skins to beat the Sherborne 1st pair 6-5 and win another set against their 3rds to win 2 out of 3. Molly and Jimmy won their first set to install some confidence in their game, and were so unlucky not to also win their 2nd set. Gaby and Clem battled hard in each set, returning some hard serves from Sherborne and playing some fantastic deep groundstrokes to put their opposition under pressure. This really paid off as they took their 1st and 3rd sets, 6-1 and 6-5 respectively and secured us the win! This was a real testament to the mental approach of the St Marys B team, as well as their fantastic game play.

This was the Cs first game this season with lots of players new to tennis! Olivia and Issy kept big smiles on their faces whilst working hard on their positioning, which improved hugely through the afternoon and resulted in them getting to 4-6 in the last set- well done girls!

Alice and Fleur won their first set confidently, lost closely in the second but saved their best til last when they almost beat the 1st pair from Sherborne, finishing in a 5-7 loss. Real grit and determination with some steady play from Alice and improved net play from Fleur enabled them to force Sherborne to really earn their win. Penny and Isobel showed great teamwork in their 3 sets, with some improved serving and groundstrokes earning them one set out of three.

The Cs really enjoyed their tennis and it was a real joy to see them all out on court.
