Textiles Trip to V&A

On Tuesday 25th September, the GCSE Textiles students visited the V&A Museum in London to gather research and inspirational references for their work. The wealth of areas provided something for everyone to draw and photograph, which will be presented in their sketchbooks in the next few weeks.

From Islamic architecture to Victorian costume the girls were able to gather references and build up their own portfolio of images for future use. The highlight of the visit was of course the wonderful exhibition that is currently running – ‘Fashioned from Nature’. This provided an insight into the many historical applications of nature in the world of fashion and the way in which the natural world has helped to shape, decorate and embellish garments, both past and present. There was also reference to the current impact of the fashion trade on both the global economy and the environment.

After the wonders of the V&A we took a short walk in the beautiful sunshine to the Natural History Museum where the girls had more time to gather references and to document artefacts of interest to them and their developing work, particularly for Natural Structure and Form which is the current topic for the LV students. A wonderful day was had by all and the girls are now in the process of presenting and recording their visit in their sketchbooks.
