St Mary’s Welcomes New Head of Sixth Form

St Mary’s is delighted to welcome back Susie Cochrane-Dyet as Head of Sixth Form. Susie has taught at Sherborne School, Sherborne Girls’, Sherborne International and most recently she was Deputy Head (Pastoral) and Head of Sixth Form at Baobab College, a British International School in Zambia, where her husband was posted as British Ambassador. She was previously a teacher and tutor at St Mary’s and has always wanted to return to the school.

Commenting on her appointment, Mrs Cochrane-Dyet said, “I am very excited at the prospect of leading the Sixth Form tutor team as we encourage the girls to attain their ambitions and enjoy a stimulating and productive time at St Mary’s, while transitioning from a structured school life to university and beyond. St Mary’s girls achieve excellent academic results, as demonstrated this year with almost all A Level pupils achieving higher grades than predicted and joining their first choice of university. With three girls joining Oxford and Cambridge this year, and eight girls applying for next year, the personal tutoring and excellent teaching in small classes is paramount. Specialist career and higher education advice help the girls make their best choices.”

Mrs Cochrane-Dyet’s objective is to encourage pupils to be curious, through engaging with current affairs; wise, through discussion and debate; resilient, by leading a balanced life and maintaining perspective; and confident because of the nurturing support behind them. Small tutor groups and bespoke care for each individual girl ensures that Sixth Form students can become women of distinction who lead others, whilst remaining loving, kind and tolerant.

As well as Sixth Form book and film clubs, and a Modern Etiquette Society including food and drink appreciation, there is an inspirational speaker programme and an A Level Mindset course, to ensure girls achieve the highest academic standards and career prospects. The school has close links with its alumnae via the St Mary’s Old Girls Association which offers girls a network of contacts for work experience, internship opportunities and future employment. The girls in St Mary’s Sixth Form are building skills, knowledge, connections and friendships that will last a lifetime.
