St Mary’s Book Club Celebrates The WABA Prize Giving

On Wednesday, 11 girls from the Page Turners book club travelled to Bryanston with Miss Edmonds for the Wessex Amazing Book Award (WABA) prize giving event. Schools from across Wessex put a book onto the long-list back in October, which was then cut down to a shortlist of 5. Our book – The Call by Peader O’Guilin – was included on the shortlist.

The girls have been busy reading all 5 books in preparation for the prize giving event where they discussed the books with pupils from 7 other schools. The St Mary’s girls represented us fantastically and were informed and thoughtful in the group discussions before delivering mature and persuasive presentations. After the presentations came the all-important voting (and the all-important cake). Although all five titles on the shortlist are excellent books, we were thrilled when author Joffre White announced the winner as The Call.

As well as enjoying the glory of winning, the girls received a special WABA judge pen and a certificate. Our wonderful glass trophy will be on display in the library for the next year and, in the style of Eurovision, we will now be hosting next year’s WABA prize giving event.

The excitement is already building!
