Sports Report – week ending September 15, 2017

Our older girls showed the younger ones how it’s done with a win in the first match of the season. The younger girls are finding their hockey legs and there’s a lot to look forward to in the coming months!

U14  v Canford C’s   2-1 WON

What a great game to start the season! With some girls new to the team, some girls new to hockey there was all to play for. The 11-a-side team played with commitment and faith in each other and put in a great performance! Amelia scored both the goals giving the team great confidence for the season ahead.

Coach’s Player of the Match: Amelia H

Special mention to Mush, Ioana and Jimmy who worked like Trojans in defence!

U14 v Wells  (0-6)

Against a harder, sharper team, the U14’s were really put to the test! With a lot of players out of position and running needlessly, they held Wells to 2-0 at half time. The team continued after half time with determination and effort, Tess coming close to slotting in a goal with a great forward ball from Fleur and some fantastic saves from Sophia but tired legs took their toll, and at the final whistle, the better team had won. The team took plenty away with them from the game, learning lots about tactics and positioning, and as always, continued to show great team spirit and support for each other.

Player of the Match:  Fleur

Coach’s Player of the Match: Sophia M

Special mention to Ioana, Amelia, Jimmy and Alice who ran their legs off and showed courage against some big hitters!

U13 v Wells   (4-8)

For their first game together, the team performed brilliantly! After a slow start, and conceding 2 goals, they found some faith in themselves and started to play to their potential, coming back with 2 goals from Maddie and Poppy! The game was end to end, with some great saves from Emily, and some close shots from the forwards. As the confidence grew, both teams were determined to put more balls on the backboard and goals came thick and fast. We scored 2 more, one from Oliva TT and a 2nd from Poppy! Wells started to pull away at the end of the match as we began to tire, but a great start for the U13’s with the promise of more great games to come!

Player of the Match: Emily S

Coach’s Player of the Match: Poppy L

Special mention to Olivia TT and Maddie H who worked really hard up the middle channel, making opportunities for each other to score!

U12 v Wells

Lots of new girls coming into the team with great potential has meant we are able to field an exclusive U12 team! They played their hearts out and we were really proud of their persistence and effort in a hard first game!

Player of the Match: Violet N (Yr 6!)

Coach’s Player of the Match:  Emily D for maintaining a great team shape and Eliza C for great skills.

Special mention to Frankie, Scarlett R, Sofia, Willa, Scarlett C, Bella and Angelica for their first hockey game ever for St Marys! Well done, girls!
