Silver DofE Expedition to the Black Mountains

‘Silvers thinking like Golds’

Last weekend, 12 girls from LV successfully completed their Silver DofE qualifying expedition. The expedition took place over three days with two nights camping in the Black Mountains starting at Abergavenny and finishing at Bwlch. On day one, the girls walked from Abergavenny up to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain and then down into the valley to stay overnight at Llanbedr. On day two, they walked from Llanbedr to Ty-Mawr and on day three, they completed the walk around Mynnydd Troed and then onto a plateau walk, Mynydd Llangorse, before ending up at the Star Bunkhouse in Bwlch.

The weather was excellent and once on the ridges, the girls were able to marvel at the superb views and surrounding countryside. Both groups prepared presentations for the assessor at the end. The first presented a book containing research on the local flowers and grasses they had seen on the walk and the second prepared a video of their team dynamics throughout the walk.

We were extremely impressed with the team work, camp craft, navigation, enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of the groups. They were walking in Gold training areas and had to endure some long climbs and descents on a very warm weekend.  Both the instructor and assessor said the girls were,  “Silvers thinking like Golds.” This epitomises the St Mary’s ethos. Well done to Emily, Lara, Theodora, Chloe, Tabitha, Alexa, Katy, Bea, Olivia, Mimi, Bella and Rosanna.  Next step is Gold in Lower Sixth.
