Football Victory v Sherborne International

The St Mary’s Football Team played their first match of the season today, securing an impressive a 5-0 victory over Sherborne International. On a wet November afternoon, the girls began with the perfect combination of excitement and anxiety, with many taking part in their first ever football match. The hours and hours of training sessions on Tuesday evenings paid off straight away with the St Mary’s girls securing and controlling possession in Barcelona-like style. The pressure on Sherborne International’s defence soon took its toll, with Sofia slotting home a well struck shot, followed by a goal from Paula a few a minutes later. With Bea and Rocio holding firm in defence, the team managed to keep hold of their 2-0 lead as the half-time whistle blew.

The second half saw a lot more positional experimentation, with everyone having the opportunity to play in a variety of positions. The team continued to pass the ball well, with Aby, Cecilia and Paula making particularly good use of the space down both wings. Notable mentions must also go to Tilda and Kristin, who demonstrated their versatility by playing excellently in a number of positions, as well as Begona who was authoritative in goal, distributing the ball superbly to set up a number of attacks. The second half saw another three goals with Sofia and Paula both doubling their tally for the day, as well as Cecilia finishing a well-worked and well-deserved goal.

Well done to all the girls who played as they showed great professionalism and respect throughout, doing St Mary’s proud.
