English Trip to Royal Shakespeare Theatre

Urban violence, knife crime and loud rock music formed the backdrop to a very contemporary and accessible performance of “Romeo and Juliet” watched by the LV English GCSE group last week at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre at Stratford upon Avon. Some very interesting changes were made, particularly in the character of Mercutio, who was cast as a girl, which will provide much discussion in class this week. Arriving with free time to spare, the LV wandered round a sunny Stratford and took in the sites. Next year, this group will be able to take part in the Theatre Club run by the English Department which enables students to see the best of British theatre, as a weekend activity, in London and Stratford. Tickets for a hip-hop version of Twelfth Night at the Young Vic in November are already booked.
