DNA Technology Workshop, Bristol University

On the 14th March, during British Science Week, the UVI Biologists visited the excellent DNA Technology Workshop run by Dr Rose Murray at Bristol University. The day gave the girls an insight into working in a university laboratory with professional lecturers, using specialist technical tools as well as revising aspects of the genetics course in a novel way. We predicted our phenotypes for a ‘taste’ gene and then analysed our DNA to identify our genotype by carrying out a ‘restriction digest’ (using restriction enzymes to cut DNA), amplifying the DNA using PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and then separating the DNA fragments by electrophoresis.  We enjoyed all of the workshop, working with other students from Clayesmore and Kings Bruton.
